New York Cup July 2024
New York City, NY — July 18, 2024 — On July 7th, two U18 squads, male and female, embarked on an exciting journey to New York to participate in the prestigious New York Cup. The trip was not only a competitive success but also a culturally enriching experience for the students.
During their stay in the vibrant city, the students visited iconic landmarks such as the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, and Staten Island. They also strolled across the historic Brooklyn Bridge, shopped along the bustling 5th Avenue, attended a New York Mets baseball game, and explored the diverse neighbourhoods of Little Italy and Chinatown. A poignant visit to the World Trade Centre site left a lasting impression on the young travellers.
The sightseeing experiences were life-changing for the students, who relished every moment of their time in New York. "The students really enjoyed their time sightseeing in New York and had life-changing experiences which they will never forget," remarked one of the accompanying staff members.
On the field, the students delivered commendable performances. The women's team dominated their group games, securing victories in each match and advancing to the final. In a thrilling showdown, they faced a formidable team from Boston and emerged victorious in a nail-biting penalty shootout, winning 5-4. Holly, a second-year student set to take up a scholarship in America, scored the decisive penalty, securing the championship title for her team. The women's team's triumph was a testament to their hard work, team spirit, and determination throughout the tournament.
The boys' team, despite an initial setback, displayed remarkable resilience. After losing their first game, they took feedback from their coaches to heart and won their next two group games with outstanding team performances. Although they did not advance to the semi-finals, the boys' experience in international tournament football will undoubtedly benefit them in future competitions, including the upcoming Dallas Cup.
The trip was hailed as an unforgettable experience for both students and staff. "The staff told the students they were very proud of the way that the students behaved and conducted themselves on the trip, and that they were a credit to our college," shared one of the coaches.
Overall, the journey to New York was a remarkable blend of sportsmanship and cultural exploration, leaving an indelible mark on all participants.
